FACES OF AFFORDABLE HOUSING |
Affordable housing is about everyone in our community being able to afford a home that supports good physical, financial, and emotional well-being. This occasional series produced by Lakes Region Community Developers, Lakes Region Community Services, and Laconia Housing features stories of people who live in affordable housing in the Lakes Region to demonstrate the diversity of people who thrive in affordable housing and how it enriches our communities. Judi Devoted caregiver, dedicated volunteer, longtime community member, and advocate are just a few of the words one could use to describe Lakes Region Community Developers (LRCD) Resident and Board Member, Judith Donnelly. For 34 years, Judi worked as a licensed real estate agent at Maxfield Real Estate in Wolfeboro, while her husband Bill worked as a self-employed general contractor, handling everything from carpentry to finish work. They built a good life together, raising their son and establishing themselves as fixtures in the Lakes Region community. But when Bill became seriously ill in his 50s, losing his vision, experiencing heart attacks, and battling cancer, everything changed. In 2014, Judi left her real estate career to become Bill's full-time caregiver. While caring for her husband and maintaining their ranch home in Brookfield, the weight of managing everything alone became overwhelming. Bill could no longer help with any of the household tasks, and Judi found herself stretched beyond her limits. That's when a friend living at Harriman Hill told them about the community.... Our goal is for everyone in the Lakes Region to live in a home that supports good physical, mental, and financial health and is empowered to reach their full potential.
